Saturday, October 10, 2009
1:00 PM to 9:00 PM | Pre-Conference Workshop: Survive and Thrive After Peak Oil
Creating Personal Plans for the Coming Decades The Challenge: How should we plan our lives in the face of peak oil, global climate change, and the ongoing financial crisis? Much thought has gone into policy questions around energy, but less attention has been given to helping people prepare their own plans for such concerns as finance, careers, education, nutrition, community, housing, and transportation. It’s time for all of us to help fix that! Continued “business as usual” planning for individuals, families, and communities will not be good enough any more. Cost: $95 Learn More |

Testing, to see if the comments are turned off?? Seems to be working. My attendance is doubtful this year but I did attend the meetings in Houston and Sacramento. They were well organized with an extraordinary group of speakers. I was especially impressed with Randy Udall and Steve Andrews. Randy is a superb moderator with a colorful and entertaining style. Steve seems to be working behind the scenes from morning to night making sure that everything runs smoothly. The program this year is astonishing. I wonder if Walter Youngquist will be in attendance. If so will someone ask for an update on the status of the Second Edition of the classic GeoDestinies. Will Micheal C Lynch finally attend?

I agree that the program this year is astonishing. ASPO-USA has really gone out of their way to get as many as possible on the program this year. The Sunday program is longer than last year, and all of it will be recorded on video. If ASPO-USA follows past practices, Powerpoint presentations will be up on the web afterwards, and available for free.
I see Professor Bartlett from UC will be there. Other than Hubbert's curve, who/what from the much vaunted Colorado School of Mines will be there?
I would also like to see some "resource specialists" from the USGS show up. Denver Federal center is right there in Lakewood.
From ASPO 2009 Content Team:
We have to keep some of our ammo dry!!! We always face the problem of too many experts that we want to feature, and this year since the conference doubles as an ASPO-International once, we had to reserve many slots of for international speakers as well. As we have decided that all future ASPO-USA annual conferences will be held in Denver, you can rest assured we will be tapping into the outstanding resource expertise at CSM and the USGS.
This year Vince Matthews will be giving a North American commodities outlook, Peter Dea and Art Berman will be giving different perspectives on our natural gas outlook.
And of course, lots of people will be talking about oil resources around the world.
I hope ASPO talks about OPEC tarmat extraction, and how many wells now need ESPs or jetpumps, as these require energy to run thus lowering Net Energy from crude and natgas. Any forecast of a big OPEC ramp to artificial lift should be a serious Peak warning sign, IMO. We may be closer to making the turn on the Net Energy Cliff than we think:

This also figures in my WAG of [19 @ '19].

I am very interested in the Saturday program, as it is breaking new ground. How do we plan in our own lives? What do we actually DO?
Answers in my family have included investing in the energy efficiency of our home (thereby circulating $$ in our own community and increasing local resiliency), Debt reduction and eschewing the trappings of consumer status culture, and using less. A growing garden based on Permaculture principles, and a growing neighborhood and larger community sustainability movement are both show-and-tell and praxis.
Unfortunately, I can't justify the carbon expense of flying from Alaska to Denver for the ASPO Conference, so this is one session I hope we can get a full report on, perhaps even a video of the wrap-up.
All of us have to live our personal lives; please make this session available!
Thanks,
