Comment nesting problems

I made some minor changes to the code that lays out the comments. If the comment threads do not have their usual "nested" appearance in your browser, try clearing your browser's cache and reloading the page (added 1/4 10:10a EST). If the problem persists, please leave a comment with your operating system version and browser version.

Could your changes have affected the Find function. On Firefox usually putting "[n" in the find box allows me to go to each new post by simply hitting the Next arrow. Now typing in the "[n" gets me to the first new post but then hitting Next highlights the "[n" in the Find box and gets me no farther. Strange.

IME, that is a common Firefox bug that has nothing to do with what web site you're on.

The fix is to close Firefox and open it again.

Or even just close the tab you're having trouble with, and opening the site in a new tab.

P.S. Of course, if you do that, you'll nuke all your "new" flags.

What I usually do is finish reading the thread by positioning the cursor below the first "new" flag, then typing a square bracket into the search box again. That takes you to the next "new" flag. Do the same thing again - position the cursor below that new flag, and type a square bracket into the search box again. It's a pain, but it works.

Once you've read all the new posts, then open the thread in a new tab.

Shift+reload fixed the problems for me (Firefox + XP64)

BTW does anyone have a good workaround for the fact that searching for "new]" always scrolls the browser (Firefox & IE at least) so the [new] line appears right at the bottom of the screen, so you then have to scroll down further to see the message? One way around it is to search backwards through the posts as the [new] then appears at the top and the comment is readable directly. Makes following a threaded conversation tricky though. :-)

Hello Super G.

I'm afraid i'm not seeing the posts threaded.

The browser in question is Opera 9.5(the ultimate internet experience) and MS Vista. Everything is correctly displayed when using IE.

Hope it easily can be fixed.

Thanks.

Nesting looks fine in Opera 9.25 here, running on XP.

HI, nice work.

BTW could there be some easy way of adding a 'print-view' type link ? - I
frequently use a width-challenged display, and the articles are squeezed
between sidebars, which is no problem for text, but does chop in half most
of the inline images...
TIA ..

Yeah, me too on the size-challenged monitor.
And comments are still not nested.
Running Opera 9.21 on WinXP Pro SP2.

Wow. Threading is OK in IE, but this post does NOT appear.
Both browsers open side by side, all posts except this one in IE.
Can anyone else see this post?

Yes.

I've been asking for a full-width version for some time.

Apparently it is not a simple thing to do.

This is a reply to the Hanx Blix comment, but it is not indented.
Browser info: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11

EDIT:  After a shift-reload, it's indented properly.  Guess it's the style sheet after all!

What horizontal resolution do you use? We try and make the content fit on a 1024 pixel wide display.

I’m using Mac OSX 10.5 and Safari 3 and there is no nesting. I kind of like it that way, though replying in the right place will become a hit and miss affair.

I'll just start a new thread to see if I can see it.

In Opera, I see:
7 comments on Comment nesting problems
Post a comment

In IE I've got:
5 comments on Comment nesting problems
You must log in to post a comment. If you don't have an account, create one.

I did not open IE till after my last post, so it cannot be a cache problem.

Super G !

I just closed both browsers, flushed caches, and re-opened.
Threading is OK in opera now, but in IE I only have 5 comments.
I logged into the site in IE, then there were 10 comments.
I logged out of the site in IE, then there werwe 5 comments.

I will try it in logging out of the site in opera now.

Same problem in Opera. Only 5 comments when logged out, now 11 when logged in.

That's the way it's always been. If you're not logged in, there's a lag. You don't see the latest content, whether it's new articles or new comments.

Eventually, it will show up, even if you're not logged in.

Have you tried clearing your cache?

Yeah, cleared all caches.
I had not noticed the lag before.

The lag exists because as a non-logged in user the webserver is giving you a slightly delayed, cached copy. It shouldn't be more than a few minutes old. This improves the overall performance of the site.

Great explanation. I recently added something similar to the site's FAQ.

Try deleting your TOD cookies and logging in again.

Yeah, it's sweet now.
I just didn't know about the cache delay before.
All good.

Now all good here too.

No problem with Opera 9.25, Vista.

Firefox 2.0.0.11 in Windows XP home works fine for me

I am also using Firefox 2 in Windows XP. I had to go to Tools, Options, Privacy, Show Cookies, then scroll down and highlight theoildrum.com and delete it. I did a refresh, logged back in, and all is well.

Lynx browser (Linux). Comment threading (indenting) is no more.

clearing the entire cache is not needed - a full refresh (holding shift while clicking the refresh button in firefox) fixed the problem for me

That didn't work for me. I had to clear my cache.

It worked for me but lost all my "new" flags. That is terriable because when you get up to over 100 posts, new flags are absolutely essential. Looks like fixing some small problem created a much larger problem.

I'd hardly call it a "much larger problem."

It's a one-time deal. You won't have to do it again. At worst, you'll have to skim all the comments in that one thread if you want to be sure you didn't miss anything.
